European Cars That Turn 25 in 2027

From January 2027, European cars built in 2002 start becoming legal to import into the United States under the 25-year rule, one build month at a time. A car built in June 2002 can enter the US from June 2027; one built in December 2002 only from December 2027. The list below covers the European models from that year that Americans never got, or only got in a different form. Most of them can be bought in Europe today and shipped the month they turn 25.

How the 2027 cut-off works

The 25-year clock runs from the month of manufacture shown on the car’s build plate, not from the model year or the first registration. Federal safety standards are waived for vehicles at least 25 years old (49 CFR 591.5(i), form HS-7), and EPA standards for vehicles at least 21 years old in original configuration (form 3520-1). If the build month cannot be proven, the car is not eligible, and a car that is even one month too young can be refused entry, exported or seized.

Exact eligibility depends on each car’s build month, not on the dates above. We check the plate on every car before it is offered.

Diesels and California

Many of the most wanted 2027 cars are diesels: the Defender Td5, the diesel G-Class, the T4 TDI, the BMW and Volvo diesels. They are federally legal at 25 years, but California does not register imported diesels, and gasoline cars built after 1967 face a costly CARB process there. Georgia and Maine are also high-risk. Most other states register a 25-year-old import with a title, a VIN check and, in some areas, an emissions test. Check yours in the state-by-state guide.

Already looking at 2028?

Cars built in 2003 qualify in 2028. That year includes the BMW M3 CSL (E46), the Renault Clio V6 Phase 2, the Smart Roadster, the Mercedes E55 AMG Estate (S211) and the Porsche 911 GT3 (996.2) in its European 2003 form. We take reservations for those too.

Prices for “never sold in the US” models tend to rise as their 25th birthday approaches. Tell us the model and the build months you want: we find the car in Europe, have it inspected in the country where it is, and ship it the month it becomes legal, landed at a US port with the import paperwork done. Start a custom search or set an inventory alert. To budget the landed cost, see how much it costs to import a car from Europe.
