Peugeot 405 Mi16 and T16 for sale
2 cars in stock right now, inspected in the European country where they are located, priced landed at a US port with the import paperwork done.
Americans know the Peugeot 405 for one thing: Ari Vatanen’s 405 T16 Pikes Peak run in 1988, and the film Climb Dance that came out of it. The road cars are two: the Mi16, a 160 hp 1.9 16-valve sedan, and the 405 T16 (1992–1995), a 220 hp turbocharged four-wheel-drive homologation sedan, about 1,061 built. Peugeot withdrew from the US market in 1991 and sold neither of them there.
Why Americans want it
The T16 is the road version of the most famous hillclimb car ever filmed, and it is still cheap by the standards of 1990s homologation specials. The Mi16 is one of the best-handling sedans of its decade for the price of a used commuter car.
What the US never got
- 405 T16 (1992–1995), 2.0 turbo, 220 hp, four-wheel drive with rear-wheel steering.
- 405 Mi16 after 1991 — Peugeot left the US market that year, and the later Mi16 and the facelift never came.
- The diesel and estate versions of the whole range.
Eligible years (25-year rule)
Every 405 is eligible now. Production of the T16 ended in 1995.
What to look for
- T16 specifics: the four-wheel-drive system, the rear-steer rack and the turbo. Parts are specific to roughly a thousand cars and are the reason a cheap T16 is not cheap.
- Rust: rear arches, sills, the boot floor and the suspension mounting points. French cars of this era rust.
- Mi16 engine: the XU9J4 is strong; check the timing belt history and the head gasket.
- Interior: T16 trim and the specific instruments are hard to replace.
- Documents: for the T16, the build number and history. For the Mi16, simply the straightest car you can find.
Typical landed price
Europe: roughly €9,500 for a good Mi16 to €33,000 for a documented T16. Landed at Newark or Baltimore with duty at the rate in effect on entry: roughly $21,000–$55,500.
Registration notes
- California: built after 1967, gasoline; CARB lab certification applies, not guaranteed.
- Fuel: gasoline.
- Title: 17-character VIN. US title from Salvage Motors LLC. Because Peugeot did sell in the US until 1991, some DMVs will look for a US record; the CBP package settles it.
Our take
The T16 is the collectible and will stay one. The Mi16 is the one to actually drive, and at these prices the shipping costs more than the difference between a mediocre car and a good one — so buy the good one.
