Lotus Exige S1 for sale
1 car in stock right now, inspected in the European country where it is located, priced landed at a US port with the import paperwork done.
Lotus did not sell a car in the United States between 1995 and 2004. When it came back, it came back with the Series 2 Elise and a Toyota engine, for model year 2005. The Exige S1 — the hard-top, fixed-wing, Rover K-series version of the Series 1 Elise, built in 2000 and 2001 in roughly 600 examples — was never part of that, and has never been sold in America.
Why Americans want it
It is the lightest and most extreme version of the car that reinvented Lotus, with the engine Americans never got, in a body that looks like a race car because it effectively is one. It is also one of the few genuinely rare Lotuses.
What the US never got
- Exige S1 (2000–2001), 177 or 190 hp Rover K-series, about 600 cars.
- Series 1 Elise in any form — the US Elise was the Series 2 from 2005.
- The Sport 160, Sport 190 and the 340R.
Eligible years (25-year rule)
Cars built in 2000 are eligible now. 2001 cars qualify month by month through 2026, so a car built in August 2001 can enter from August 2026. The build plate decides.
What to look for
- The K-series head gasket. This is the defining issue of the engine. Find out which gasket and which oil rail the car is on, and whether it has been addressed properly. A car that has not been is not a bargain.
- Chassis: bonded aluminium, does not rust, but impact damage is specialist work and sometimes terminal.
- Clamshells: composite, expensive, and frequently scraped at the front.
- Which engine: 177 hp or the 190 hp VHPD. The 190 is more valuable and more highly strung.
- Right-hand drive: most Exige S1s are RHD. That is perfectly legal in the United States and registers normally, but it affects resale and day-to-day use — decide before you buy, not after.
Typical landed price
Europe: roughly €70,000 for a good 190. Landed at Newark or Baltimore with duty at the rate in effect on entry: around $112,000.
Registration notes
- California: built after 1967, gasoline; CARB lab certification applies, not guaranteed.
- Fuel: gasoline.
- Title: 17-character VIN. Registration depends on the state where you register the car: California requires CARB laboratory certification for gasoline cars built after 1967 and cannot register diesels, and the CBP package establishes the car as an import.
- Right-hand drive is legal in every state; some states note it on the title or require a mirror check at inspection.
Our take
Buy the head gasket history. Everything else about an Exige S1 is predictable; that one item is the difference between a weekend car and an engine out.
FAQ
Was the Lotus Exige S1 sold in the United States?
No. Lotus returned to the US market for model year 2005 with the Series 2 Elise and a Toyota engine. The Series 1 Elise and the Exige S1 were never sold there.
Is right-hand drive a problem in the US?
No, it is legal in every state and registers normally. It affects resale and everyday convenience, not legality.
What is the K-series head gasket issue?
The Rover K-series is known for head gasket failure. Which gasket and oil rail the car is on, and whether the fix was done properly, is the most important question on any Exige S1.
