BMW M3 E30 for sale
None in stock at the moment. We buy to order across Europe: tell us the specification and the build months you want, and we find the car, have it inspected where it is, and deliver it to a US port with a US title. Start a custom search or get an alert when one comes in.
The E30 M3 was sold in the United States, as a coupe, for model years 1988 to 1991, with the S14 four-cylinder rated at 192 hp. That is the car most Americans mean. Europe got the same shell with more power and four versions that never crossed the Atlantic: the Evolution, the Evolution II, the Sport Evolution and the Convertible.
So the question is not whether you can buy an E30 M3 in America — you can — but whether the one you want was ever sold here.
US car or European car?
| US coupe | European versions | |
|---|---|---|
| Power | 192 hp | 195 hp standard, 215–220 hp Evolution, 238 hp Sport Evolution |
| Body | Coupe only | Coupe and Convertible |
| Homologation specials | None | Evolution, Evolution II, Sport Evolution 2.5 |
| Equipment | US lighting, bumpers, catalytic converter | European lighting, no catalyst on early cars, lighter trim |
| Importing needed | No — buy domestically | Yes |
A US-market car is often the sensible purchase: there are plenty, the parts network knows them, and nothing has to clear customs. Import a European one when you want a version America never had.
What the US never got
- M3 Convertible (1988–1991), roughly 786 built, hand-assembled. Full buying guide.
- Evolution and Evolution II (1988–1989), 505 and 501 built.
- Sport Evolution (1990), 600 built, 2.5-litre, 238 hp, adjustable front splitter and rear wing.
- European-specification standard coupes, lighter and slightly more powerful than the US cars.
Eligible years (25-year rule)
Every E30 M3 is eligible now. Production ended in 1991.
What to look for
- Is it really an M3? The E30 M3 has a unique bodyshell — different rear screen angle, wider arches, its own boot lid. A 325i dressed as an M3 is obvious to anyone who knows, and invisible to anyone who does not. Buy the VIN and a BMW Group Classic certificate.
- The S14 engine. Valve adjustment history, timing chain, and whether it has been rebuilt. It is a motorsport engine with motorsport service intervals and a motorsport rebuild bill.
- Rust. Rear arches, jacking points, boot floor, windscreen surround, and the battery tray.
- Evolution claims. The homologation cars have their own VIN ranges and build records. The value gap is enormous and so is the incentive to misrepresent.
- Originality. Many were raced or tracked. A standard road car with history is rarer than a prepared one.
Typical landed price
European prices depend entirely on version and documentation: an ordinary European coupe is a fraction of a Sport Evolution. We price each car individually, landed at a US port with the paperwork done. Tell us which version you want.
Registration notes
- California: built after 1967, gasoline; CARB lab certification applies, not guaranteed.
- Fuel: gasoline.
- Title: 17-character VIN that decodes as a BMW. Registration depends on the state where you register the car: California requires CARB laboratory certification for gasoline cars built after 1967 and cannot register diesels, and the CBP package establishes the car as an import.
Our take
If you want an E30 M3, look in America first — we will tell you that even though it costs us a sale. Come to us for the Convertible, an Evolution, a Sport Evolution, or a European coupe with the specification you cannot find domestically. That is what importing is actually for.
FAQ
Was the BMW M3 E30 sold in the United States?
Yes, as a coupe for model years 1988 to 1991, rated at 192 hp. The Convertible, the Evolution, the Evolution II and the Sport Evolution were never sold there.
What is the difference between a US and a European E30 M3?
Mainly power and equipment: 192 hp for the US coupe against 195 hp standard in Europe, 215–220 hp for the Evolutions and 238 hp for the Sport Evolution, plus European lighting and lighter trim.
Should I import one or buy one in America?
Buy domestically if you want a standard coupe. Import when you want a version America never received — the Convertible or one of the homologation Evolutions.
How do I avoid a fake?
The E30 M3 has a unique bodyshell. Verify the VIN against BMW build records; a BMW Group Classic certificate is the document to insist on.
