The Audi S2 (1990–1995) is the direct descendant of the Ur-quattro: a 2.2-litre five-cylinder 20-valve turbo, around 230 hp, driving all four wheels through a manual gearbox, in the Coupé shell and later as an Avant and a saloon. It was never sold in the United States, where Audi’s performance range of the period began with the S4 of 1992.
Why Americans want it
It is the five-cylinder turbo sound and the quattro drivetrain in the body Americans remember from the 1980s Coupé GT, with far more power and the 1990s build quality. The Avant is the one most people want: a fast, understated estate with a manual gearbox and all-wheel drive, a combination Audi never offered here.
What the US never got
- The model: no S2 was sold through Audi of America.
- The engine: 2,226 cc five-cylinder 20V turbo, around 230 hp, later 230–235 hp with the larger turbo.
- The Coupé and Avant bodies with quattro and a manual gearbox.
Eligible years (25-year rule)
Every S2 is eligible now. Production ran from 1990 to 1995, so all cars are more than 25 years old; the build month on the plate is what is documented at entry.
What to look for
- Turbo and boost: a tired K24 or K26 turbo and worn boost hoses are common. Ask when the hoses and the wastegate were last done.
- Timing belt: the 20V five is an interference engine. We want an invoice, not a promise.
- Rust: rear arches, the sunroof surround, the windscreen base and the front wing edges.
- Drivetrain: the centre differential lock, the rear Torsen and the clutch; a modified car with a big turbo and a remap needs a careful look at the gearbox.
- Mileage: these cars often show 200,000 km or more. That is normal for the engine, less so for the interior and suspension.
Typical landed price
Europe: roughly €18,000–€45,000, from a high-mileage Coupé to a tidy Avant. Landed at Newark or Baltimore with duty at the rate in effect on entry: roughly $33,500–$73,000.
Registration notes
- California: built after 1967, gasoline; CARB lab certification applies, not guaranteed.
- Fuel: gasoline.
- Title: 17-character VIN. US title from Salvage Motors LLC. US VIN decoders will flag it as a non-US VIN; the DMV works from the CBP package.
Our take
The Avant is worth the premium. Buy a standard car with history rather than a modified one, because the drivetrain is the expensive part and a 300 hp remap on a 30-year-old clutch and gearbox is somebody else’s problem until it becomes yours.
FAQ
Was the Audi S2 sold in the US?
No. Audi of America’s first S car was the S4 in 1992; the S2 Coupé, Avant and saloon were European.
Is the S2 the same as the Ur-quattro?
It is its successor and uses the same five-cylinder 20V turbo family in the later Coupé bodyshell.
Is high mileage a problem?
Not for the engine, if the timing belt and turbo have been maintained. Look at the interior, suspension and rust instead.
