The Opel Calibra Turbo 4×4 (1992–1997) is the fast version of the most aerodynamic mass-produced car of its day: a 2.0-litre 16-valve turbo of 204 hp, a six-speed Getrag gearbox and permanent four-wheel drive. Opel was not a US brand, and no Calibra was sold in America.
Why Americans want it
A drag coefficient of 0.26, a six-speed box in 1992, all-wheel drive and a shape that still looks modern. It is also one of the last genuinely obscure European coupés: an American who buys one will not meet another.
What the US never got
- The model: Opel did not sell cars under its own name in the US. The Calibra was European, with Vauxhall badges in Britain.
- Turbo 4×4: 204 hp C20LET engine, six-speed Getrag F28, permanent four-wheel drive.
- The 2.5 V6 and the 16V naturally aspirated versions, equally absent.
Eligible years (25-year rule)
Every Calibra is eligible now. Production ran from 1990 to 1997.
What to look for
- Gearbox: the F28 six-speed is the weak point and is expensive and hard to find. Listen for noise and check the synchros on second and third.
- Turbo and head gasket: the C20LET runs hot; look for a recent gasket and a healthy cooling system.
- Four-wheel-drive system: the viscous coupling and the rear differential, often neglected.
- Rust: rear arches, the fuel filler area, the tailgate and the windscreen base.
- Modifications: many were tuned hard in the 2000s. A standard car with history is worth paying for.
Typical landed price
Europe: roughly €10,000–€20,000 for a sound Turbo 4×4. Landed at Newark or Baltimore with duty at the rate in effect on entry: roughly $21,500–$36,500.
Registration notes
- California: built after 1967, gasoline; CARB lab certification applies, not guaranteed.
- Fuel: gasoline.
- Title: 17-character VIN. US title from Salvage Motors LLC. A US VIN decoder will not recognise an Opel; the DMV works from the CBP package.
Our take
The gearbox decides the deal. A Calibra Turbo with a fresh or healthy F28 and a standard engine is a good buy; a cheap one with a whining box is a parts hunt across Europe.
FAQ
Was the Calibra sold in the United States?
No. Opel did not sell under its own name in the US, and the Calibra was never federalised.
What is the C20LET?
The 2.0-litre 16-valve turbocharged engine of 204 hp used in the Calibra Turbo 4×4, also found in the Vectra Turbo.
Is it reliable?
The engine is strong when cooled properly. The six-speed gearbox is the part that fails, so buy on gearbox condition.
