Land Rover Defender Td5: the modern diesel Defender the US never had

The Defender Td5 (1998–2007) uses a 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbodiesel with electronic injection, the last Land Rover-designed Defender engine. The US only ever received a V8 Defender in 1993 and 1994–1997. Td5 Defenders built through October 2001 are legal today; later 2001 and 2002 builds follow month by month. USAutozilla sources them in Portugal and Spain.

Why Americans want it

It is the Defender everyone pictures: coil springs, the Td5’s torque, a real heater, a five-speed manual, and 300-mile range. The North American Spec V8 cars sell for $100,000 and up; a straight Td5 110 station wagon from southern Europe is a fraction of that, with the diesel economy overlanders actually want.

What was never sold in the US

Eligible years (25-year rule)

Td5 production began in 1998. Every Td5 built through October 2001 is eligible now. A Defender built in November or December 2001 becomes legal in November or December 2026. 2002-built Td5s become eligible month by month through 2027, which includes the last pre-facelift cars. We verify the build month through Land Rover Heritage before purchase.

What to look for

Typical landed price

Europe: roughly €30,000–€55,000 for a good Td5 90 or 110 station wagon. Landed at Newark or Baltimore with duty at the rate in effect on entry: roughly $43,000–$76,000. A 110 or 130 pickup or a van without rear seats is classified as a truck (HTS 8704) and carries the 25% “chicken tax”; we state the classification on every listing and recommend station wagons with rear seats and windows.

Our take

Buy a 110 station wagon with a documented chassis and a replaced injector loom and you have the most usable Defender ever built, at half the money of a NAS V8. Skip anything with a “galvanized chassis” and no invoice to prove it.

FAQ

Td5 or 300Tdi?
The Tdi is simpler and all-mechanical; the Td5 is faster, quieter and more comfortable. Both are eligible. Td5 is our default recommendation for a driver.

Will the 25% chicken tax apply?
Only on pickups and panel vans classified as trucks. Station wagons with rear seats and side windows are passenger vehicles at the standard rate.

Can you source a 130 crew cab?
Yes, with the 25% duty built into the landed price, or as a chassis-cab on request.
