The 996.1 GT3 (1999–2001) is the first 911 to wear the GT3 badge: a 3.6-liter Mezger flat six with 360 PS, a 6-speed, no rear seats and a motorsport-derived chassis. Porsche did not offer it to US customers; the first US GT3 was the 996.2 for model year 2004. Cars built through October 2001 are legal today.
Why Americans want it
The Mezger engine, the manual, the hydraulic steering: the 996.1 GT3 is the purest of the modern GT3s, and it is the one US collectors have never been able to have. Fewer than 1,900 were built. 996.2 GT3s sell for $120,000–$180,000 in the US; the Mk1 commands a premium.
What was never sold in the US
- Model: the entire 996.1 GT3, 1,868 cars built.
- Engine: 3.6 Mezger (M96/76), 360 PS at 7,200 rpm, dry sump, roughly 273 lb-ft.
- Transmission: 6-speed manual (G96/90), limited-slip differential.
- Versions: Comfort and Clubsport (roll cage, bucket seats, fire extinguisher, no air conditioning).
- Years: May 1999 to 2001. The US first received the GT3 with the 996.2 in 2004.
Eligible years (25-year rule)
1999 and 2000 cars, and 2001 cars built through October, are eligible now. A GT3 built in November or December 2001 becomes legal in November or December 2026. The 996.2 GT3 (from 2003) is not relevant to the 25-year rule for US buyers; it was sold here.
What to look for
- Engine: the Mezger does not have the IMS issue of the standard 996. Check for oil leaks at the cam covers and the RMS, and ask for an over-rev report from a Porsche dealer (ranges 5 and 6 matter).
- Track history: many were tracked. Look for a cage (Clubsport is factory), worn bucket seats, replaced splitters, and ask for the over-rev report.
- Body: front bumper and splitter chips, rear arches on cars with widened wheels, and accident history; we verify panel paint depth on every car.
- Originality: factory wheels (18-inch Sport Design), standard exhaust, correct seats. Modified cars sell at a discount.
- Documents: Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, full service history, build sheet confirming Clubsport or Comfort.
Typical landed price
Europe: roughly €120,000–€180,000 depending on history and mileage; Clubsports at the top. Landed at Newark or Baltimore with duty at the rate in effect on entry: roughly $160,000–$238,000. Sole-use container freight recommended.
Registration notes
- California: post-1975, gasoline; CARB lab certification applies, not guaranteed.
- Fuel: gasoline.
- Title: 17-character VIN. US title from Salvage Motors LLC. Specialty insurers (Hagerty, Chubb) write agreed-value policies on Euro GT3s.
Our take
A Comfort car with full Porsche history and a clean over-rev report is the one to buy; Clubsports carry a premium that only matters if you track it. This is a collector purchase, so buy the paperwork first and the car second.
FAQ
How is the Mk1 different from the US 996.2 GT3?
Earlier Mezger with 360 PS (vs. 381), different front bumper and headlights, no US certification, and roughly 1,868 cars vs. a larger run.
Is left-hand drive available?
Yes; most continental European cars are LHD. UK cars are RHD and cheaper.
Does it have the IMS bearing problem?
No. The Mezger engine uses a different design.
