Easy
Overview
Louisiana requires an annual safety inspection but it’s relatively basic. Emissions testing is minimal and limited to a few metro areas.
Key Requirements
- Annual safety inspection — covers brakes, lights, horn, mirrors, tires, windshield, exhaust and steering.
- Emissions — minimal, in Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Lake Charles metropolitan areas only.
- Titling — at the OMV (Office of Motor Vehicles) with federal import documentation.
Notes for European Imports
The safety inspection is basic and shouldn’t be an issue for a well-maintained vehicle. DOT headlights are recommended but enforcement varies. Port of New Orleans is a convenient entry point.
Recommendation
Generally easy. The safety inspection is not particularly strict.
