Easy
Overview
Washington D.C. has biennial safety and emissions inspections but the process is manageable. Pre-1967 vehicles are exempt from emissions.
Key Requirements
- Biennial safety inspection — every two years, covering brakes, lights, tires, steering and exhaust.
- Biennial emissions — for 1968+ vehicles. Pre-1967 exempt.
- Titling — DC DMV with federal import documentation.
Notes for European Imports
The combined inspection is done at a DC inspection station. DOT-compliant lighting is checked. Pre-1967 imports only need the safety portion. DC’s urban setting means parking and storage are practical considerations for classic cars.
Recommendation
Manageable biennial process. Pre-1967 imports have an easier path.
