The Ford Escort RS Cosworth (1992–1996) is a Sierra Cosworth 4×4 floorpan under an Escort body, built by Karmann in Germany, with a 2.0 Cosworth YB turbo and the biggest rear wing ever fitted to a production Ford. It was never sold in the US. Every one is now over 25 years old and legal to import.
Why Americans want it
Ford built it, and Ford never sold it here. The whale tail, the Group A and WRC history, the Gran Turismo and Need for Speed generations: the Escort Cosworth is the European Ford that US Ford fans know best and have never been able to buy. Values have doubled in Europe over ten years; US auction results are higher still.
What was never sold in the US
- Model: the entire Escort RS Cosworth line, roughly 7,145 cars built.
- Engine: 2.0 Cosworth YBT (1992–1994, Garrett T3/T04B “big turbo”, 227 PS) and YBP (1994–1996, Garrett T25 “small turbo”, 224 PS, better low-end response).
- Transmission: 5-speed MT75 manual, permanent 4WD with a 34/66 split.
- Versions: standard, Lux, and the Monte Carlo special edition (1995); earlier Motorsport-spec 3-door “homologation” cars are the most valuable.
Eligible years (25-year rule)
Production ran from 1992 to January 1996, so every Escort RS Cosworth is eligible now. Nothing switches over in 2027 or 2028.
What to look for
- Originality and provenance. Many cars have been stolen, crashed, tuned or cloned. We verify the VIN (WF0BXXGKAB…), the Cosworth engine number, and the build record where available, and we look for welded or replaced front chassis legs.
- Engine: YB engines tolerate tuning badly when done cheaply. Standard boost, standard ECU and a documented head gasket are what we want to see.
- Rust: rear arches, inner sills, the rear chassis rails and the boot floor. Spanish and Portuguese cars are better; many UK cars have had repairs.
- 4WD system: check the viscous couplings and the transfer box for noise; the MT75 gearbox should shift cleanly.
- Documents: V5C or EU registration, original Ford service book, Cosworth build plate.
Typical landed price
Europe: roughly €55,000–€95,000 for standard cars; more for early big-turbo cars and the Monte Carlo. Landed at Newark or Baltimore with duty at the rate in effect on entry: roughly $76,000–$128,000. Container freight recommended.
Registration notes
- California: post-1975, gasoline; CARB lab certification applies, not guaranteed.
- Fuel: gasoline.
- Title: 17-character VIN. US title from Salvage Motors LLC. Most Escort Cosworths are right-hand drive; RHD does not affect registration in any state.
Our take
Buy a documented, standard-boost car with a clean shell and accept paying for it. A tuned Cosworth with no history is a gamble no one should take across an ocean. Big turbo for the legend, small turbo for the better road car.
FAQ
Big turbo or small turbo?
Big turbo (1992–1994) is the homologation spec and worth more. Small turbo (1994–1996) is more drivable at low revs.
Is right-hand drive a problem?
Not for registration or insurance. It affects resale by roughly 15–25% in the US, and we price accordingly.
Can I get parts?
Cosworth YB parts are well supported in the UK; Escort-specific panels and the wing are reproduced.
