Easy
Overview
North Carolina has an annual safety inspection and emissions in about half its counties, but the process is manageable for imported vehicles.
Key Requirements
- Annual safety inspection — covers brakes, lights, steering, tires, horn and exhaust.
- Emissions — in 48 of 100 counties for 1996+ vehicles. Pre-1995 exempt statewide.
- Titling — DMV with federal import documentation.
Notes for European Imports
The safety inspection will check lighting, so DOT-approved headlights are recommended. In the 52 counties without emissions, only the safety check applies. Pre-1995 imports skip emissions everywhere.
Recommendation
Manageable, especially for pre-1995 imports or owners in non-emissions counties.
