Alfa Romeo SZ and RZ for sale
1 car in stock right now, inspected in the European country where it is located, priced landed at a US port with the import paperwork done.
The Alfa Romeo SZ (1989–1991) is the one people call Il Mostro: a 3.0-litre Busso V6 of 210 hp in a 75-based chassis, with a composite body by Zagato that looks like nothing else Alfa has ever built. 1,036 SZs were made, followed by about 278 RZ roadsters. Alfa Romeo left the US market in 1995 and never sold either.
Why Americans want it
It is a Zagato-bodied Alfa with the best engine the company ever made, built in numbers small enough to be a genuine collectible, and it is completely absent from America. It also sounds like nothing else at this price.
What the US never got
- SZ (1989–1991), 1,036 cars, composite body, 210 hp.
- RZ (1992–1994), the roadster, about 278 cars.
- The 75 / Milano chassis in this form — the US Milano was the sedan.
Eligible years (25-year rule)
Every SZ and RZ is eligible now. Production ended in 1994.
What to look for
- The body: composite panels over a steel structure. Panels are model-specific and effectively unobtainable, so damage history matters more than mileage.
- The Busso V6: cam belt service is the defining maintenance item and must be documented.
- Suspension: the SZ has its own adjustable setup with a hydraulic lift. It fails and it is specific.
- Transaxle: 75-derived rear transaxle; check the clutch and the linkage, which are awkward on all 75-family cars.
- Provenance: with roughly 1,300 cars across both models, build number and history are part of the value.
Typical landed price
Europe: roughly €95,000 for a good documented SZ. Landed at Newark or Baltimore with duty at the rate in effect on entry: around $153,500.
Registration notes
- California: built after 1967, gasoline; CARB lab certification applies, not guaranteed.
- Fuel: gasoline.
- Title: 17-character VIN. US title from Salvage Motors LLC; a US decoder will not return an SZ, so the DMV works from the CBP package.
Our take
Condition of the bodywork is the deal. The engine can be rebuilt and the suspension can be sorted; a damaged Zagato panel is a hunt across Europe with no guaranteed ending.
FAQ
Was the Alfa Romeo SZ sold in the United States?
No. Alfa Romeo’s US range ended with the 164 and the Spider, and the SZ and RZ were European cars.
How many were built?
1,036 SZ coupes and about 278 RZ roadsters.
What is the biggest risk?
Body damage. The Zagato composite panels are model-specific and essentially unobtainable; mechanical parts are shared with the Alfa 75 and are findable.
