Audi RS4 Avant B5 for sale
3 cars in stock right now, inspected in the European country where they are located, priced landed at a US port with the import paperwork done.
The Audi RS4 Avant B5 (2000–2001) is the one that started the line: a 2.7-litre biturbo V6 reworked by Cosworth Technology to 380 hp, quattro, a six-speed manual, and a body widened by 60 mm. It was built as a wagon only, about 6,000 of them, and it was never sold in the United States — America’s first RS4 was the B7 sedan in 2007.
Why Americans want it
A 380 hp manual wagon with four-wheel drive, in 2000. It is the direct ancestor of every RS wagon Americans have been asking Audi for ever since, and the only way to own one is to import it.
What the US never got
- The B5 RS4 in any form. The US received the S4 B5 (265 hp) and later the B7 RS4 sedan.
- The Avant body — the B5 RS4 was never offered as a sedan anywhere.
- The manual gearbox with this engine, in this chassis.
Eligible years (25-year rule)
Cars built in 2000 are eligible now. 2001 builds become eligible month by month through 2026, so a car built in March 2001 can enter from March 2026 and one built in November 2001 from November 2026. The build plate decides, not the model year.
What to look for
- Turbos: the K04 units are a known wear item and a pair is a serious bill. Listen for smoke on boost and check service history.
- Modifications — the big one. A large share of these cars were tuned hard, to 480 hp and beyond. A 700 hp build is a different car with a different risk profile and should be priced as such, not as an RS4.
- Timing belt: the 2.7 biturbo belt service is major and must be documented.
- Rust: rear arches and the tailgate; less of an issue than on older Audis but not absent.
- Suspension: the RS4-specific setup and the brakes are expensive to return to standard.
Typical landed price
Europe: roughly €42,000 for a standard high-mileage car to €127,000 for a heavily built or collector-grade one. Landed at Newark or Baltimore with duty at the rate in effect on entry: roughly $68,500–$193,500. A clean standard car sits nearer the bottom of that range.
Registration notes
- California: built after 1967, gasoline; CARB lab certification applies, not guaranteed. A modified engine makes this materially harder.
- Fuel: gasoline.
- Title: 17-character VIN, decodes as an Audi. US title from Salvage Motors LLC.
Our take
Buy standard. The tuned cars look like value on the listing price and are not, because the EPA exemption rests on the car being in its original configuration and because the parts that break are the ones the tuning loaded.
FAQ
Was the RS4 B5 sold in the United States?
No. The first US RS4 was the B7 sedan in 2007. The B5 Avant was European, with some cars going to Japan and Australia.
Is a 2001 RS4 eligible now?
Only once its build month is 25 years past. A 2001 car becomes eligible in the corresponding month of 2026; we check the build plate before offering any car.
Does tuning affect the import?
It can. The EPA exemption for vehicles over 21 years old applies to cars in their original unmodified configuration, so a heavily modified engine is a question to settle before shipping, not after.
