Volkswagen Golf Country: the lifted 4×4 Golf the US never got

The Golf Country (1990–1991) is a Mk2 Golf Syncro that Volkswagen shipped to Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Graz, Austria, to be lifted roughly 4.7 inches on a subframe, given skid plates, a bull bar and a rear-mounted spare. Only 7,735 were built. It was never sold in the US. Every Golf Country is now over 25 and legal to import.

Why Americans want it

It is the crossover before crossovers, built on the Golf the US loves, with the Syncro all-wheel drive the US Mk2 never offered. It looks like a toy and drives like a Golf. Bring a Trailer sales have run $30,000–$45,000 for clean examples, and the supply is small.

Our take

A complete Golf Country with its bull bar, skid plates and spare carrier is a conversation in every parking lot and a cheap car to run. Buy complete; the Country-only parts are nearly impossible to find.

FAQ

Is it a real off-roader?
Light-duty: gravel, snow, beach. Ground clearance is the point, not rock crawling.

Can VW parts stores in the US help?
Mk2 Golf mechanical parts are shared and available. Country-specific parts are not.

How many are left?
No reliable count. Of 7,735 built, enthusiasts estimate a few thousand survive, mostly in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
